A few minutes with Jocelyn “Joz” Wang….

V3con is excited to have “Joz” Wang, creator and executive director of V3con speak on the panel “Asian Spotting in the Traditional Media” at the Japanese American Museum on August 25.

Joz is also the president of AAJA-LA, co-editor of blog 8Asians, and works as part of the Creative Team for Walt Disney Parks & Resorts Online. We caught up with Joz to learn a little more about her, and why she loves what she does.

What do you love about what you do?

I do a lot of things! Let’s answer this in list form, alphabetical order:

  • 8Asians: I love that 8Asians reflects so many diverse Asian American voices and viewpoints. As a blogger, I love being able to write about things that are important (or at least interesting!) to our community. As one of the Co-Editors, I really love having the friendship of 8Asians colleagues such as Moye Ishimoto (Co-Editor) and Ernie Hsiung (Founder), as well as leaders of other publications such as Phil Yu, Jen & Diana,YOMYOMF, Gil Asakawa, and more.
  • AAJA: I love being part of an organization of journalists and media professionals who are committed to helping the next generation and each other in a fast-changing industry. Being President of AAJA-LA, the founding chapter the Asian American Journalists Association, is a real honor and huge responsibility. I’m simply in awe of what an incredible Board we have at the Los Angeles Chapter… we are so lucky to have such a dedicated and hardworking team that is really committed to its members! I feel very grateful for the camaraderie and support from this Board, especially the 3 former Chapter Presidents: Denise Poon, Henry Fuhrmann, and Anh Do, who all returned to the Board this year and joined the V3 Steering Committee despite each of their very busy schedules.
  • V3con: I love knowing that I’m bringing together the various communities I’m involved with — the Asian American, journalism, and blogging communities– and building bridges between them. As a team, by putting on V3con, we’re highlighting the vision, visibility and voice of AAPIs online. But personally, it feels like V3con connects many of the threads that are tied to my heart.
  • Walt Disney Parks & Resorts Online: I love being part of a Creative Team that brings the magic online! (Seriously, I mean it!) I’m very grateful to work at a place that is overflowing with talent, creativity, and good humor.

Yes, I know… I need to do less! It’s just hard not to be involved when– other than the sheer volume of stuff I’m doing– I really do love everything I am involved with.

What surprises you about blogging?
I am always surprised at how blogging can be simultaneously easy and hard! On one hand, it’s easy to start blogging. On the other hand, it’s hard to keep doing it!

Your favorite hangout in LA?
I honestly do not have a single favorite hangout– I just love L.A.! In no particular order, here are some neighborhoods which are like “home” to me: Little Tokyo, Larchmont Village, and the San Gabriel Valley. Yes, they are quite different, which I suppose, shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone!
